Del was born on September 26, 1938. He grew up in Fairmont and attended school at Fairmont and later Trimont where he graduated from high school, Class of 1957. Two weeks after graduating from Trimont High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and embarked on a journey that had him serving as a radar man from 1957 to 1960 where he attained the rank of RD3 before he was honorably discharged. This experience seemed to instill in him a strong sense of duty, which he carried throughout his career. Del attended Dunwoody Technical School in Minneapolis after his discharge and worked at Cenex Cooperative in Trimont prior to starting his career at Central Telephone Company in 1966. Upon retirement, Del found his calling as a school bus driver for Johnson BusLines/Palmer Bus Company in Le Center, where his passion for the role and the children he drove was evident. His evenings driving the football team were particularly cherished, reflecting his love for community and sports. In his free time you could find Del fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles, gardening, morning coffee with friends, and spending time with family.
Del's faith was a cornerstone of his life. As a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, he played an active role in various committees and served on the church council. His volunteer work and the joy he found in taking pastors fishing spoke volumes of his love for fellowship. Proverbs 3:5-6 “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” was a guiding light for him, illustrating his deep trust in divine guidance.
Family was at the heart of Del's world. His pride in his children and grandchildren was palpable, as was his unwavering support. Del was not only a loving husband but also a generous friend, embodying kindness and thoughtfulness in all his interactions. His legacy is one of love, faith, and joy, and though he will be deeply missed, the comfort of knowing he is with the Lord brings peace to those who mourn his passing.
Del is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; their children Dan (Linda) Bettin, Kala (Brett) Heaton, Tammy (Chad) Anderson, Sherri (Jeff) Johnson, Beth (Jeff) Sinn, and Vicki (Charlie) Mach; grandchildren, Dustin, Matt, DJ, Leah, Tyler, Jake, Tanner, Korey, Ashley, Sam and Allie; eleven great-grandchildren; his sister, Mardella, and many other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Bradley, his parents Art & Gladys, his siblings Darrell & Marcella, and his grand-daughter, Kailey.
