Dean Robert Thate was born on January 29, 1953, in Fairmont, MN, the son of Robert and Shirley (Hoppe) Thate. He began his education in Northrop and later attended school in Ceylon graduating from Ceylon High School with the class of 1971. Following his graduation, Dean attended one year of college before returning home and beginning his career as a farmer.

On December 29, 1984, Dean was united in marriage to Linda Engle at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lytton, IA. Farming wasn’t easy in the early 80’s, so Dean and Linda made the difficult choice of living apart during the week where Dean worked on the farm and Linda worked in Des Moines, IA. After 3 years, they finally made their home together on the family farm near Dunnell, MN, where they raised their three children, Darren, Jenna and Ethan.

Dean loved life on the farm and took great pride in working the land for over 46 years. His favorite job on the farm was tillage work. In his spare time, Dean enjoyed afternoons spent in the local hangout playing cards and drinking coffee with his buddies. He cherished spending time with family and traveling to visit relatives. Dean loved statistics and had a passion for baseball where he often could rattle off stats and stories of some of baseball’s greatest players. He had a trap for a memory making sure to never forget a birthday of those he cared about.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda Thate; children, Darren (Brenna) Thate, Jenna (Mike) Flaherty, and Ethan (Renae) Thate; grandchildren, Dustin Thate, Londyn Thate, Madison Thate, Natalie Flaherty, and Evelyn Thate; siblings, Dorie Lewis, Lynn (Mary) Thate, Darcy Jones, and Tracey (Dan) Schley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lois (Dennis) Nelson, Joan (Steve) Amos, Jim (Marlys) Engle, and Wayne Hermann; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirley Thate; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Ethel Engle; two sisters, Faye Wenzel and Connie Hermann; and a brother-in-law Scott Jones.
