Joe “Joey” Luis Jr. Leija, age 62, of Montgomery, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 11 from 3-7pm at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Montgomery.

Joe was born on February 22, 1961 in Fentress, TX. to Jose Luis and Vickie (Sanchez) Leija. He moved to Montgomery in 1995. Joe was united in marriage to Kimberly Walters on February 15, 2005 in Le Center. He worked at Green Giant, United Steel and Michaels Foods. He enjoyed fishing, grilling, working on cars, warm weather and playing music loud.

Joe is survived by his wife, Kim Leija of Montgomery; mother, Vickie Leija of Eagle Pass, TX.; children, Ernie Leija of Eagle Pass, TX., Shayla Walters of New Prague, and Isaac Leija of Montgomery; grandchildren, Kayla Leija, Alexandra Leija, and Briella Arens; great-grandson, Angel; siblings, Annie (David) Davila of San Antonio, TX. and Diana Santoya of Eagle Pass, TX.; several nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by his father; and brother, Paul Leija.
